| The Chagall Windows at All Saints Church, Tudeley, and Ightham Mote, Kent |
Join us for a day trip to The Chagall Windows at All Saints Church, Tudeley followed by a visit to Ightham Mote. We will break our journey with a stop for coffee/tea (not included in the cost) at Notcutts Garden Centre, Tunbridge Wells before arriving at Tudeley.
The Chagall Windows at All Saints Church, Tudeley Entry to the Church and a guided tour is included in the cost. Tudeley has had a church since the beginning of the seventh century. The earliest parts of today's church are the sandstone footings of the nave and tower, which date from before the Norman conquest. In memory of their daughter, who died in 1963, Sir Henry and Lady D'Avigdor-Goldsmid commissioned the Belarusian-French artist Marc Chagall to design a stained glass window for the church. Following the intallation and dedication of the east window in 1967, Chagall decided to design the remaining eleven windows in watercolour and these were all installed by 1985.
Ightham Mote We plan to arrive at the National Trust property Ightham Mote in time for lunch (picnic in the grounds or lunch at the Mote Café lunch is not included in the cost). After lunch visit the house, described as "the most complete small medieval manor house in the county". A journey through the house will take you through 700 years of history. Ightham Mote is not a show home for one time period, but a living example of the changing fashion and needs of its owners. Afterwards, visit the garden - with smaller, more formal courtyard gardens, lawns and borders leading to more open, relaxed, areas of planting and woodland, The cost of the visit is £25 per person (which includes entry to All Saints Church but not to Ightham Mote. Entry by National Trust members is free – non members will have to pay £19 entrance fee on the day). No refreshments are included in the cost.
The coach will leave Guildford (Artington) at 8.30 am and Clandon at 9.00 am. We plan to leave Ightham Mote at approximately 4.30 pm.
You can book your place at our our visit to the Chagall Windows and Ightham Mote either at the next lecture or by email. The price is £25 per person.

| A Day Out in Salisbury including a Tour of Arundells, Sir Edward Heath's former home |
A Day out in Salisbury Join us for a day trip to Salisbury. Highlights include:
Arundells (the former home of Sir Edward Heath). Entry to the House and Gardens is included in the cost. The House (which is situated in the Cathedral Close) was originally a medieval canonry first occupied in 1291. The gardens extend to around two acres with lawns, mature trees and borders. The contents of the House reflect Edward Heath’s time in public life including gifts from many world leaders. His art collection includes works by Sir Winston Churchill, WL Wyllie, LS Lowry, John Singer-Sargent, John Nash and both Augustus and Gwen John. The tour takes about an hour and a half with a group size of between 10 and 12 people. Tours have been booked for every 30 minutes starting at 11.00 am
Salisbury Cathedral Entry to the Cathedral is NOT included in the cost. The entry fee on the day is £14.50 pp but if bought in advance is £12.50 pp. Tickets can be bought in advance on the Cathedral’s website (https://www.salisburycathedral.org.uk/visit-us/your-visit/). Tickets are valid for 12 months and although when booking online you will be required to pick an entry time the website states “If you arrive a little before or after your booked slot, that’s absolutely fine. Just make sure to arrive between our first entry and last admission times on the day of your visit.” The cathedral is regarded as one of the leading examples of Early English Gothic design. It was built over a relatively short period, between 1220 and 1258 with its tower and spire completed by 1330. The cathedral's spire, at 404 feet (123 m), is the tallest in England. The chapter house displays the best-preserved of the four surviving original copies of Magna Carta.
Mompesson House and gardens Entry to the House and gardens are NOT included in the cost.However, this property is owned by the National Trust and therefore entry is free for NT members. Mompesson House is an 18th century town house in the heart of Cathedral Close. There is a tranquil walled garden with traditionally planted herbaceous borders and pergola.

| Canterbury Cathedral |
Our next visit is on Tuesday, May 13th when we shall visit Canterbury Cathedral. The cost is £42 per person (which includes coffee/tea on arrival but does not include lunch). This follows our April Lecture entitled Canterbury Cathedral Through Three Lives, given by Jonathan Foyle who is best known for presenting the BBC's TV series, 'Climbing Great Buildings' (currently available on the BBC iplayer including an episode on Canterbury Cathedral). Booking for the visit has opened and full details (including how to book) can be found below. Founded in 597, the cathedral was completely rebuilt between 1070 and 1077. The east end was enlarged at the beginning of the 12th century, and largely rebuilt in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174. Significant eastward extensions were made to accommodate the flow of pilgrims visiting the shrine of Thomas Becket, the archbishop who was murdered in the cathedral in 1170. The Norman nave and transepts survived until the late 14th century, when they were demolished to make way for the present structures.
The coach will leave Guildford (Artington) at 8.45 am and Clandon at 9.15 am. We expect to arrive at the cathedral at approximately 11.00 am where we will be served coffee/tea (included in the price). We will then be given an introductory talk before visiting the catherdral. An audio guide of the cathedral will be available at a cost of £5 (purchased at the cathedral). Enjoy the day at your own pace visiting the cathedral and the city. The coach will leave Canterbury at 4.30 pm.

| Beaulieu |
Our next visit on March 11th is to Beaulieu (www.beaulieu.co.uk). Our discounted ticket of £42* provides coach travel and access to all the attractions including: National Motor Museum. From the earliest motor carriages to classic family saloons, the world-famous National Motor Museum has one of the finest collections of cars, motorcycles and motoring memorabilia in the world. From legendary F1 cars and land speed record breakers for the speed freaks, to incredible examples of pioneering motoring for the history-buffs. Palace House. Once the gatehouse of the medieval Beaulieu Abbey, Palace House has been the Montagu family home since 1538. In an idyllic New Forest setting, overlooking the picturesque Beaulieu River millpond, Palace House was remodelled and extended during the 1800s and is now a fine example of a Victorian country house. Inside, its ecclesiastical heritage sets the grand gothic tone for a home bristling with character and adorned with family treasures, portraits, and memorabilia. Beaulieu Abbey. This 800 year old Abbey was founded by King John in the 13th Century before being destroyed on the orders of King Henry VIII in 1538. Owing to the efforts of the Montagu family ancestors, distant relations of these former kings, the now tranquil Abbey is a conserved ruin where generations of visitors have enjoyed its peaceful setting and appreciated the achievements of its medieval builders. Beaulieu’s Clock House. This is home to the UK’s first dedicated Soviet Russian art gallery. This gallery has been established as a showcase for the Art Russe Foundation which was founded by Ukrainian-born entrepreneur and philanthropist Andrey Filatov. His vision is to increase understanding and appreciation of late nineteenth and twentieth century Russian art and bring it to an international audience. You’ll also be able enjoy a bird’s-eye-view of the Beaulieu grounds with unlimited rides on the ‘Skytrain’. Our coach will leave Clandon at 8.30 am and Guildford (Artington) at 9.00 am arriving at Beaulieu at approximately 10.30 am (depending upon traffic). Tea and coffee will be available in the Brabazon Restaurant where you will be able to enjoy lunch (please note no refreshments are included in the price). Enjoy the day at your own pace visiting the attractions which are of most interest to you. The coach will leave Beaulieu at 4.30 pm. *You can book your place on our visit to Beaulieu on 11th March 2025 either at the next lecture or by phone or email. | Rousham Gardens, Bicester |
Rousham House was originally built in 1635 by Sir Robert Dormer and is still in the ownership of the same family. William Kent (1685-1748) who was a garden designer, painter, stage designer and architect, added the wings and the stable block and furnished and decorated much of the interior although some of the 17th century panelling remains. The garden was commissioned in the early 18th century, by General James Dormer. Kent developed and completed the original design by the royal gardener, Charles Bridgeman. He saw the garden as a stage so that every path culminates in a statue or building and gives a sense of drama with the garden visitor at centre stage. Rousham represents the first phase of English landscape design and remains almost as Kent left it, one of the few gardens of this date to have escaped alteration, with many features which delighted eighteenth century visitors to Rousham still in situ, such as the ponds and cascades in Venus’s Vale, the Cold Bath, and seven arched Praeneste, Townsend’s Building, the Temple of the Mill, and, on the skyline, a sham ruin known as the ‘Eyecatcher’.
Monty Don says “Kent is the great genius of eighteenth-century garden design and Rousham is his masterpiece, one of the greatest gardens in the world”. To watch his YouTube clip on Rousham, click here.
We plan to arrive at Rousham at approximately 11.00 am(after stopping en route for tea/coffee (not included in the price)) giving us plenty of time to visit the gardens before lunch. Rousham is completely unspoilt and uncommercialised and has no tea room or shop. Consequently bring your own food and drinks, chairs and/or blankets and enjoy a picnic in the gardens. (The coach will park close to the gardens allowing easy access). After lunch, at 2.00 pm we will enjoy a guided tour of the House.
The price is £45 per person. The coach will leave Clandon at 8.00 am and Guildford (Artington) at 8.30 am. Booking will open at our next lecture. For details of how to book by phone/email, see below. Marble Hill is a beautiful Palladian villa set in 66 acres of outstanding riverside parkland near Richmond. It was built for the remarkable Henrietta Howard, mistress of King George ll when he was Prince of Wales, and friend and confidante of some of the cleverest men in England. The house and gardens were intended as a retreat from crowded 18th century London. | Tate Modern - Cezanne Exhibition |
Our next visit is to Tate Modern for the widely acclaimed Cezanne Exhibition. Focusing on the many tensions and contradictions in Cezanne’s work, this exhibition seeks to understand the artist in his own context, as an ambitious young painter proudly from the Mediterranean South, yet eager to make it in metropolitan Paris. Featuring many works shown for the first time in the UK, the show will follow his struggle between seeking official recognition and joining the emerging impressionists before relentlessly pursuing his own unique language.
The day includes:
- entrance to the exhibition;
- morning tea/coffee;
- a lecture on Cezanne;
- lunch.
Booking opens on November 8th either at our November lecture or by email. Full details to follow. |
